Environnement professionnel et troubles du comportement alimentaire au cours de l'internat de Médecine Générale en Aquitaine

Abstract : Objectives: general medical interns often face stressful situations dictated by the settings in which they practice, whether it be in a hospital or a medical practice. These stressful situations can lead to the development of eating disorders as a coping mechanism. The objective of this study is to identify professional factors that influence the development of eating disorders and to suggest changes to the general medecine curriculum aimed at preventing such eating disorders. Methods: this is a transversal study repeated on a group of 204 general medical interns from November 2013 until November 2016. These medical interns voluntarily filled out online questionnaires at the end of each semester. Socio-demographic data, characteristics of respondants' professional environment, as well as degree of risk in developing eating disorders were gathered. Results: 92 responded fully to T1, 29 to T4 and 86 to T6. The percentage of interns at risk of developing eating disorders is stable, at between 14.3% and 15.3%. The main risk factors in the development of eating disorders are stress linked to workload and administrative tasks in conjunction with interns' underlying levels of depression and anxiety. The risk does not vary depending on speciality practised.. Similarly, working in a general hospital, a smaller hospital or a medical practice does not influence risk factors. Conclusion: to prevent and limit the risk of developing eating disorders, it is necessary to study the roles given to interns in each specialty area and to monitor underlying levels of anxiety, depression and stress. Preventative tools should be added to the medical curriculumin order to reduce the occurence of these problems.
