La contraception dans le post-partum

Abstract : Background : Four percent of women who had an abortion gave birth six to twelve months before. Contraceptive failures such as missed pill are still frequent especially in the post-partum period with a risk of an unwanted and closely-spaced pregnancy. Therefore this study has focused on what the women who have recently given birth know about what to do in case of any contraceptive incident and it has also focused on knowledge about emergency contraception. Study design : A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted from 12th September to 18th November 2016. 286 women who have recently given birth in a type three maternity of Auvergne region were recruited. 207 women completed the self-assessment questionnaire from the third day after childbirth. Results : A total of 170 women are included. The majority of women chose the progestogen-only pill or the condom. 61,8% know the return of fertility and the risk of pregnancy. Around half of the women have a knowledge score lower than 50 %. Level of studies, parity, post-partum contraception, contraceptive difficulties, previous use of emergency contraception and knowledge about return of fertility seem to have a positive influence on their knowledge. Discussion : Not all types of post-partum contraceptive methods are included in this study. These results despite a limited population are confirmed with results of others studies. Awareness of women on the risk of pregnancy and what to do in case of any contraceptive incident is very important A leaflet about what to do in case of any contraceptive incident could be given at the maternity. There is also the question about advanced supply of emergency contraception, which is not systematically recommended but on case-by-case.
