Enquête sur les accidents de la vie courante des enfants de 0 à 5 ans, ayant lieu dans la sphère privée, admis aux urgences pédiatriques du Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bordeaux Pellegrin

Abstract : Background and purpose: home and leisure injuries are important causes of morbidity and mortality in childhood. The aims of our study were to compare, according to type of injury, characteristics of home and leisure injury victims younger than six years old; and to compare these characteristics with the general population. Method: a prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2016 to September 2017 in the pediatrics emergency department of the university hospital, Bordeaux, France. Anonymous questionnaires were distributed to parents of children younger than six years old who were victims of home and leisure injuries that occurred when children were not under the responsibility of professionals. A cluster sampling was stratified on seasons and school periods. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to estimate associations between characteristics and types of injury. Results: 488 children and their families were included (participation rate of 86%). The injury mechanisms were fall/penetrating/trauma/blow (414), foreign body inhalation/ingestion/in a part of body (29), burns (17), poisoning (13), animal bites (4), drowning (3), other (8). Comparing poisoning with others events, parents were more often both unemployed (OR=7 (1.7, 27.6)), the child was more often younger than three years old and care only by family (OR=4.2 (1.2, 15.2)). Compared with the general population, there were more boys, children aged between one and three years old and beneficiaries of universal health coverage. Conclusion: reducing health inequalities without stigmatizing individuals is challenging. More research is needed to determine if some socio-demographic characteristics impact particularly some type of injuries such as poisoning.
