Les informations disponibles sur internet concernant les programmes d’éducation thérapeutique du patient dans les troubles bipolaires : étude en Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Abstract : Bipolar disorders are chronics and severe diseases, affecting 1 to 2.5% of the general population. They lead to excess mortality, significant social, professional and cognitive functional repercussions for people suffering from bipolar disorder and a major economic impact for the society. The pharmacological treatment has a primordial role with an established efficiency, although most of the time, insufficient. In the field of chronic diseases, psychoeducation has expanded significantly over the last 20 years to help patients and their families to acquire and maintain skills to improve their quality of life. Many studies, notably conducted by Colom and Vieta, have demonstrated the effectiveness of the psychoeducation in bipolar disorders. Preventing relapse, reducing the severity of symptoms, improving knowledge of the disorder, drug adherence, and the overall functioning of the patient are all arguments explaining the inclusion of psychoeducation in international recommendations for the management of bipolar disorder. However, few patients are referred by health professionals to a program. This observational study aims to describe the information available on the internet concerning psychoeducation programs dispensed for bipolar disorders in New Aquitaine for which information available on the internet. Our judgment criterion is the relevance for a patient wishing to enroll in a program or prescriber. Administrative websites and health facilities give little information and associative websites do not promote psychoeducation. Only ten programs have been identified in New Aquitaine. About these programs, 30% do not display sufficient information on the internet, that is considered relevant for both patients and health professionals, and 50% do not have easy access to information. In the end, only five psychoeducation programs concerning bipolar disorders in New Aquitaine present clear and accessible information via the OSCARS website. This study shows a lack of information and promotion of psychoeducation on the internet, which limits the prescription by professionals and the demand of patients. It seems important to optimize the quality of information and its accessibility on the internet, in order to increase participation in the programs of patients and their relatives, and to improve their quality of life with the disease. Tools as websites centralizing all relevant information could be developed, the awareness of professionals and users could be increased and the psychoeducation systematically offered to people with bipolar disorder.
