Vers l'instauration d'un sport d'hiver : les aventures du ski de fond

Abstract : Being ignored in favour of alpine skiing, cross-country skiing remains less study and its history, as a sport, stay to be written (Valette, 2016). The purpose of this study is to reveal the underlying process of emergence, organization and development of this activity, during the Belle Époque (1894-1914), to fully-fledged sport into other winter sports and other manners of skiing. These wood skates both means of transport, distraction object or stand of sport confrontation (Morales, 1999) see the diversification of their meanings according to places, temporalities and players since the end of XIXth century. Between exploration skiing with adventure values updated at Belle Époque, an useful skiing with patriotic purposes and a competition skiing settled in sport institutionalization process : cross-country skiing slowly emerge in France, concurrently to an updated relationship to individuality (Renaud, 2009) being part of individual motivations’ diversification in a frame where community is always prioritized.
