Taurodontism: towards a new definition ?
Le taurodontisme : vers une nouvelle définition ?
Résumé
Taurodontism is a morphologic dental anomaly where the body of the tooth is enlarged at the expense of the roots. The etiology of taurodontism is still unclear. It has been proposed that, after the completion of crown of the tooth, it may be caused by a failure in the diaphragm of Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath, by not invaginating at the adequate time and horizontal level. This root development process can stop at various levels resulting in the type of hypo-, meso- and hypertaurodontism. Severals authors established classifications trying to qualify taurodontism (Keith, Shaw, Keene, Blumberg and al., Feichtinger and Rossiwal, Shifmen and Chanannel, Holt and Brook, Witkop, Seow and Lai, Tulensalo and al.) but it remains insufficciently clear because the tooth is considered in two dimensions. Nowadays, new X-ray imaging equipments as micro-CT and cone beam CT allow threedimensions
evaluation of the tooth and specify the diagnostic of taurodontism.
