Étude prospective de la faisabilité technique et de l’intérêt économique, agronomique et environnemental de cultiver trois cultures en deux ans dans le contexte pédoclimatique de Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Abstract : The current agricultural context requires compromise between competitiveness and sustainability. Some farmers take advantage of intercropping to grow a covercrop which can be harvested. The Chamber of Agriculture of New Aquitaine wanted to assess the feasibility of this practice and evaluate its economic, environmental and agronomic interests. A survey was run among farmers who practice intercropping and focused on buckwheat. Typical cases of technical itineraries have been constructed to describe the main techniques. Information gathered and bibliography have made it possible to highlight intercrop yield limiting factors. A climatic study has assessed the break-even yield of buckwheat on a multi-year basis. It was noticed that this yield depended very much on the selling price, the cost of the seeds, and the climatic station. For many climatic stations, buckwheat is profitable in the long term. On the other hand, for others the risk of not harvesting is too great and it would be more interesting for farmers to grow green manure. The environmental interest of buckwheat appears to be lower than that of the latter. Buckwheat has some interests in weeds control and the remobilization of inorganic phosphorus. The evolution of this practice will depend on many factors including climate change, and further research is needed on other crops.
