Dans la forêt de l’échafaudage : la figure de l’échafaudage dans l’art contemporain

Abstract : Scaffolding has been fascinating architects and artists for a long time triggering some interesting processes of appropriation. The analysis of a corpus consisting of in situ contemporary artworks using scaffolding has revealed several levels of interpretation of this artistic practice of scaffolding. Predictably, it begins with its obvious link to the working site and its primary use as a support. But scaffolding also demonstrates both a horizontal extension as a thick limit and a stage scene and a vertical extension as a symbol of elevation and the inherent fall that may thus occur. Finally, erecting scaffolding may be seen as a synthesis of the organic geometry of the human body and the orthogonal geometry of construction and as the symbol of an architecture continuously in motion.
