Impact de la pollution atmosphérique sur les résultats de la FIV au CHU de Bordeaux : étude rétrospective

Abstract : Objective: air pollution impact assessment on the in vitro fertilization outcomes at the University Hospital in Bordeaux Methods: retrospective study on the first and the second IVF attempts from 1st January 2013 to 31th December 2017. Creation of two groups: “good” and “poorer” results for clinical pregnancy rates per transfer, embryo freezing rates, fertilization rates and pick-up birth rates and of two groups: “pollution” and “no pollution” for the air quality index, PM10 and PM2.5. Our first investigation compares the average of pollutant in the groups “good” and “poorer” results and in our second investigation we calculate IVF success criteria rates in the groups “pollution” and “no pollution”. Results: 2489 attempts have been included. We have found a significant increase in PM10 concentration for the “poorer” results in the embryo freezing rate (21,51 ± 8,74 vs 19,24 ± 6,59; p=0,03). There was a significant decrease in the embryo freezing rate for “pollution” in the air quality index (26% vs 37%; p=0,01). Conclusion: this study has highlighted an adverse impact of air pollution on the embryo freezing rate which is indirectly related to embryonic morphology. Prospective studies, measuring precisely the inside and outside pollutant concentration in the ART laboratory and removing various confounding bias, would be necessary to conclude this outcome.
