La connaissance de la contraception intra-utérine chez les étudiantes nullipares : enquête auprès de 2391 étudiantes des Universités

Abstract : Background: The intra uterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a highly effective contraception which has been offered since 2004 to the nullipara population. However, it has not yet gained popularity as a form of contraception. Thus, this study was interested in the level of understanding amongst the nullipara students about intra uterine contraceptive devices, as well as their general opinion of them. Study design: This is an observational descriptive and cross-sectional study realized thanks to the distribution of surveys to the students of the Clermont Auvergne University through the digital working space. Results: The results showed that the knowledge was generally good, with the average grade being 15 out of 20. On the other hand, the use of IUD’s as an emergency contraceptive, the localization of the IUD insertion, as well as how the device functions remain poorly known. Furthermore, the level of understanding is slightly higher for older students, those in Health Department, students who have regular gynecological care, those who are using or have already used the intra uterine contraceptive device as well as those who have had information provided by a healthcare professional. The primary concerns amongst women are the fear of having a foreign object in their body, pain, and fear of the insertion. The main advantages are simplicity, duration and efficiency Discussion: The image of this contraception remains stigmatized due to many representations. The improved education of IUD’s requires accurate information delivered during contraceptive consultations by qualified healthcare professionals so that women can have a contraceptive adapted to their needs that will allow for successful contraception.
