L'épidémiologie des blessures liées à la pratique du badminton à haut niveau au sein de l'INSEP : une étude rétrospective et prospective

Abstract : Badminton is the fastest racket sport and it is becoming more widespread. However, epidemiological studies of injuries related to playing it are rare. A prospective epidemiological study was conducted for 12 months in 2016-2017 on 20 elite French players training at the Institut National Sport d’Expertise et de la Performance to determine the incidence and characteristics of injuries during the playing of high-level badminton. Injury was defined as a complaint that results in the limitation or restriction of playing the sport. Thirty-five injuries were collected, corresponding to an incidence of 3.4 injuries per 1,000 hours of play (hop), significantly higher during games than in training (11.6 injuries vs. 2.8 injuries per 1,000 hop). Most injuries were of the musculo-tendinous type (51.4%) and were localized in the lower limbs (54.3%), particularly the feet. The severe lesions (time-loss >28 days) involved 17.1% injuries, half of which were foot injuries. We found an increase in upper limb injuries (37.1%) compared to previous studies, mainly in the shoulders. Regarding the elite badminton players, a significant limitation of the internal rotation (p = 0.033) and total rotation (p = 0.037) of the dominant shoulder compared to the contralateral shoulder was observed. The implementation of epidemiological studies of badminton injuries and the deployment of prevention programs therefore seem necessary in order to reduce the incidence of injuries, especially in the feet and shoulders.
