Les maladies neurodégénératives : comment l’industrie pharmaceutique fait-elle face au vieillissement de la population ? Solutions d’hier et opportunités de demain

Abstract : Neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer and Parkinson’s diseases, are a major health problem. These diseases concern more and more patients every year, primarily due to an aging population. The medical and economic burden for the patients, families and the society are greater than ever and raise concerns on a public health level. Available treatments are only symptomatic and have a limited intensity and/or duration of action. This report gives an overview on drugs or medical devices under development and a review of research areas on these neurodegenerative diseases. This review highlights the implication of pharmaceutical industry to answer the unmet medical needs and points out new therapeutic approaches focusing on diseases evolutions. The results of recent clinical trials don’t meet the expectations. The failure rate of new drugs candidates in Alzheimer clinical trials approximates 100% in 2017. The challenges for Alzheimer and Parkinson’s diseases are still high and so, the failures of recent clinical trials should not stop researches and developments. A better understanding of the diseases physiopathology is required as a basis of new therapies development.
