De la représentation à la transgression du genre dans les pratiques culturelles : le cas de la presse magazine masculine

Abstract : Gender is a historically and culturally reproduced social construct which, by interacting with other social determinants, directs the social construction of our identities and the organization of the social sphere. Thus, cultural practices which should a priori depend on free expression of tastes and one’s own personality, result in part from the normalization of gender norms and the passive injunctions resulting. The latter are spread through the media which, by building representations of reality, convey thought patterns, values and attitudes, shaping our collective consciousness and interaction with the world. By questioning the possibility of pushing back, even going beyond, the limits of gender in cultural practices, this paper proposes to analyze representations stemming from cultural pages in the male magazine press. Studying their themes and their manner of staging social relations in their discourse allows us to confirm the hold of gender and the domination of hegemonic masculinity in representing cultural leisure. Thus, this study highlights difficulties in escaping normative frames of conventional gender in male magazine press, despite the emergence of social models which contravene so-called “legitimate” gendered identities.
