Le plaisir de lire

Abstract : This year I am assigned to the elementary school La Feuilleraie (Marseille 13004) as a trainee teacher with a class of CE2 pupils. The staff decided to focus on reading and on the promotion of books in classroom activities. The organisation of the complementary instructional activities devoted to reading prompted questions by the teaching staff. That made me want to consider the question of reading for pleasure at school and to tackle that key question in my dissertation. I wanted to study to what extent global educational arrangements that promote the playful aspect of reading could increase motivation and pleasure of reading and therefore make a reader with school difficulties more autonomous. That measures were carried out essentially during APC and were based on fun teaching material that encouraged pleasure of reading. The experiment provides positive results. Globally pupils enjoy reading more than before and are also more motivated. Yet a 30-minute device per week can not resolve low reading and comprehension skills on its own. Besides many institutional parameters or external ones are difficult obstacles to overcome. The social dimension of reading hasn’t evolved. This dissertation highlights that measures based on fun teaching material and that aimed at promoting pleasure and motivation can work but they can not alone respond to the pupils' reading issues. They need to be completed with measures that favor, for example, co-education with all the actors (other than the school) surrounding the pupils.
