Liberté totale et partielle en maternité : adaptation, comportement et performance de la truie et de sa portée

Abstract : This report speeks about the adaptation capacity of Nucleus sows (swine genetics subsidiary of Cooperl Arc Atlantique) in a total or partial liberty pen as farrowing crates. The aim of this study was to propose a model of liberty pen for Calipro. This internship was the first step of research on liberty pen in maternity at Cooperl Arc Atlantique. A bibliographic study was made in order to determine piglets' and sows' needs in order to create a protocol. The test ran from April to July 2018 and followed 23 sows. Five pen of three different models were studied in two commercial farms (two models of total liberty pen, one model of partial liberty one). The results suggest that there is a more significant number of crushed piglets in total freedom pen compared to control ones. Sows in partial liberty did not crush any piglets during the trial. Pigs raised in total liberty pen have a better body weight gain than control sow's piglets in maternity but lower in the first week of PS. In addition, sows in liberty nurse more their piglets than control sows. Nursing activity decreases after 3 weeks of lactation. Piglets in total liberty pen stand more in the nest than control piglets. The highlighted conclusions are: the importance of the pen layout, the design of the nest, the possibility to block the sow and a floor adapted to sows needs are essential to the efficiency of the liberty pen.
