Les antibiotiques en médecine générale : une étude qualitative auprès d'une population de patients âgés de 18 à 25 ans

Abstract : Background: Antibiotics consumption remains high in France compared to the average in Europe. The patients’ knowledge about antibiotics is generally weak despite the different awareness campaigns carried out. Young population, from 18 to 25, seems to be the less well informed on antibiotics and tends to practice self-medication. Objective : Explore the representations and behaviours on people from 18 to 25 with regard to antibiotics. Methods : A qualitative study led by semi-directed interviews was carried out from November 2017 to February 2018 among willing people aged from 18 to 25. Results : 15 interviews were analyzed. The antibiotic drug was considered as a powerful and efficient treatment but it should stay occasional. The knowledge on antibiotics was poor, there was a mix-up between bacterial and viral infection for a lot of the interviewed people. During a consultation for an acute infectious disease, the main expectation was not necessarily a drug prescription but rather a diagnosis and an explanation of the disease from the physician. The importance of a reliable relationship and the possible exchange with the physician in order to be reassured about their health was often mentioned. The resistance to antibiotics was a not well-known phenomenon and was not perceived as a preoccupying personal risk as long as the antibiotics consumption remained rare. The dissemination of information on social networks or the organization of conferences with health professionals on that topic were suggested ideas to improve general knowledge on antibiotics. Conclusion : The young population seems to have a poor knowledge about antibiotics and is not sensitized to the risks of antibiotics resistance. But this is a population that may change its behaviour if properly informed by their general practitioner, who remains a major actor, and also through targeted spreading of new awareness campaigns.
