La protection solaire à La Réunion : connaissances et comportements chez les enfants et les parents en 2017-2018

Abstract : Introduction: On the Reunion Island, ultraviolet index are very high and the melanoma rate continue to rise. The objective was to assess the knowledge and behaviors of children and parents in a solar prevention campaign. Method: Two cross-sectional observational studies were performed. The first was action research with children in 11 schools between 2017 and 2018. A questionnaire collection was before and after a prevention campaign. The analysis of physical characteristics, knowledge and habits of prevention at school and outside. The second was conducted in 2018 with parents in 9 schools participating in the 1st program. The collection is informed by an assessment questionnaire of means of prevention of children before and after the campaign and their knowledge. Results: The first study counts 1138 children at the beginning of the year. Children had less prevention at school than outside (p <0.01). The overall average was 10.5 out of 20. At the end of the year, there is an improvement in knowledge. The second study has 679 parents. Of those who said they did not use prevention for their children, one-quarter said they were looking after the procedure. The overall average was 14.3 out of 20. Discussion: This study shows a lack of knowledge and a lack of protection in schools. The intervention would have a positive effect. Conclusion: Our work provides some guidance for the future of sun damage prevention on the Reunion Island.
