Effets de la pratique régulière de sports de contact sur les aptitudes de communication

Abstract : We currently know that impacts received in so-called "contact" sports have neurological repercussions for athletes. Our research was therefore born from the following research question: if they can develop post-concussive, traumatic or neurodegenerative pathologies, could they feel a change in their communication skills? In order to answer them, we distributed a questionnaire exploring different aspects of communication: discourse, conversation, speaking, emotions and social feelings. 156 responses were processed, among men, rugby players, practicing as amateurs. Our main objective was to verify if they felt any changes or difficulties since the beginning of their practice in one or more of the proposed communication items. Second, we sought to identify the main factors influencing it: age, level of education, duration and frequency of practice, nature and number of impacts. Our results showed that the changes most often felt concerned discourse, particularly the difficulty in finding words. But there are also changes in emotions, conversation, speech and social feelings. The two influencing factors found are the type of shock suffered by the players and the number of shocks. These influencing factors demonstrate the direct link between sports practice and the development of communication impairments. Our results suggest that speech therapy follow-up would be relevant in this population. Nevertheless, studies will be necessary to confirm these results and to objectify these disorders which are, in our study, only at the complaint stage.
