Hip-hop is the new theatre : dialogue(s) entre le théâtral et le concert populaire actuel à travers les concerts de Gaël Faye et de Roméo Elvis

Abstract : Since the invention and the large-scale commercialisation of the recorded music disc, popular music concerts have achieved a strong aesthetic mutation, with the multiplication of stage elements such as lights, scenography, video, costumes, pyrotechnics, dancers, etc. Nowadays, the words theatrical, performative and spectacular are often used inreviews to describe those renowned shows. Why and how do concert practitioners and theoreticians recover those terms, normally linked to theatre's or opera's fields? In view to answer this question, Gaël Faye's and Roméo Elvis' concerts have been chosen as the main analysis objects, as they embody a fundamentally interdisciplinary and technological cultural movement, hip-hop. This movement is also considered as the new rock, which is the musical genre that has brought about a revolution of the stage presence and the staging in concerts, especially through the star figure, used in theatre many times. This dissertation hinges on the interactions between theatre and contemporary popular concert, by relying on the concepts performative, spectacular and ritual, which both of those stage forms seem to share.
