Le mésusage des laxatifs

Abstract : Intestinal transit has been a subject of preoccupation for centuries. Indeed, since Middle-Age and Renaissance when enquiring about somebody’s health it was usual to ask « how do you do? » implying « to the toilet ». Nowadays, more than 150 laxative medicines are available without medical prescription. This contributes to the idea that their utilisation can only be harmless. However, some of these specialities can be very powerful and can lead to side effects or addictions if they are not used properly. The pharmacist is one of the health professional who is the most exposed to laxative abuse. One of his roles is to detect and help reducing abuses by paying attention to the patient, giving good advice and information about medicines. This thesis is studying laxative abuse, an inappropriate use, not conform to the regulatory affair and the recommendation of good practice. Laxative abuse is mainly found in three situations: eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, purging disorder), sport activity (weigh-in sports) and surreptitious laxative use. There is also a weight loss ambition abuse. On top of a theoretical approach, this work considers laxative abuse with practical cases through medical practitioners, pharmacists and users testimonies. The last part of this work focuses on the study of the laxative abuse consequences and its potential care.
