Épidémiologie des traumatismes maxillo faciaux en 2019 à Grenoble : spécificité chez les pratiquants de sports de montagne et évolution sur quarante ans

Abstract : The aim of this study was to provide an up-to-date report of the epidemiology of facial injuries treated in the Teaching Hospital of Grenoble, with a focus on the injuries caused by mountain sports. The secondary aim was to study the evolution of mountain sports trauma in the last 40 years. The complementary aim was to check if the helmet, which is known to protect the skull and scalp, had also a protective action on the face and facial bones. A retrospective study, of two years, 2016 and 2017 was carried out. It was supplemented by a comparative analysis of the mountain sport’s results with the results of 3 articles and a thesis, written in our ward in the past 40 years. The demographic data of the current study were similar to the 2006 data. Localizations of the fractures, when not discriminated according to causes, were consistently the same in previous works than in our study, with 66% of upper 2/3 fractures and 22% of lower 1/3 fractures. However, the localization of the injuries was different in mountains sports traumatisms, with a significant decrease of upper 2/3 facial injuries in the 2019 study compared to the 1981, 1985 and 1992 data. These results arised in the same years, after year 2000, when the use of the helmet became more and more common. The improvement of protective personal equipment, and other factors, like the improvement of the security in on site sport equipment, triggers a real diminution of mid face and upper face traumatisms among mountain sports practitioners.
