Place du médecin généraliste dans la prise en charge des besoins spirituels du patient : étude épidémiologique transversale auprès de 461 médecins généralistes en région Auvergne-Rhône Alpes

Abstract : Background: The spiritual dimension is included in the very definition of health and greatly impacts the patient's quality of life as well as their physical, psychological and social well-being. Taking into account the patient's spiritual needs is part of the general practioner's missions and needs to be studied. The goal of this study was to assess the general practioner’s perception of their role in the patient's spiritual care. Methods: In 2019, a transversal descriptive study by self-administered questionnaire was conducted among general practioner’s from the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region in France. Results: Among the 5,192 general practioner’s contacted, 461 complete responses were analyzed (8,9% response rate). One third of the doctors considered they have no role in this spiritual care (33%) ; one third considered their role important (36%) ; and one third expressed their need to clarify their role (31%). Their postures were mainly influenced by their confrontation to the subject (>4 times/month - Odd Ratio (OR) 3,25 [1,36-7,76] ; p=0,008) and the importance given to spirituality in the healing process (OR 2,59 [1,15-5,84] ; p=0,022). The doctor's spirituality and their own knowledge regarding the spiritual needs also impacted their posture and decisions. Conclusion: These results should prompt the development of tools and trainings aimed at general practitioners about how to care for their patients' spiritual needs. They could then see their knowledge and skills improve and feel more comfortable in handling primary care in the respect of the patient's spiritual singularities and within a bio-psychological and spiritual model.
