Estimation radiographique de l'âge chez l'enfant et l'adolescent guyanais : comparaison à une population du Sud-Ouest de la France

Abstract : Background : observations of earlier dental development are reported by dentists practicing in French Guiana. Aims: Our main objective consists in studying differences of dental maturity between a guyanese population and a population of South-West of France. We will also determine whether Demirjian et al. (1973) (D) and Willems et al. (2001) (W) radiographic age assessment methods reliably estimate civil age of guyanese children. Material and methods : from 396 clinical panoramic radiographs of children aged from 5.11 to 15.95 years collected in Kourou, and from V. Urzel’s study (2013) based on 669 children aged between 5 and 15.99 residing in Aquitaine, we evaluated the dental ages of these two populations then compared the differences to their respective civil ages. Results: the population of French Guiana presents a 6 months average dental advance compared to the French Aquitaine population studied. Demirjian et al. and Willems et al. methods do not allow accurate assessment of guyanese children’s civil age, they overestimate the age by 1.12 and 1 year (D) and 0.61 and 0.38 year (W) for boys and girls respectively.
