La quantité d'herbe valorisée par les vaches laitières et allaitantes au pâturage

Abstract : The HerbValo tool has been created in order to quantify the valorisation of the pasture to allow farmers to compare it with other crops. To create a first frame of reference of monitored plots with HerbValo in commercial farms and to study the variability of this pasture utilisation, data from 83 monitored plots from 2016 to 2018 (PERPeT project) and from 288 monitored plots in 2018 (CASDAR HerbValo) were collected. On average, 6966 kg DM / ha / year are utilised for the PERPeT project and 6100 kg DM / ha / year for the CASDAR HerbValo. In each project, the valorized quantities are very different between the plots (coefficient of variation of 40%), and in particular between the plots of the same farm (20% of variation). For a farm with an average of 7000 kg MS / ha / year, the plots can vary from 5600 to 8400 kg DM / ha / year (average ± standard deviation). The region, the depth and hydromorphy of the soil, and the age of the pasture explain in part this variability. The latter shows the interest of working at the plot scale and thus taking into account the variability of grassland production in addition to the average yield method used in commercial farms. We have shown that HerbValo is a more robust method than the disappeared biomass method often used in experimental farms. A long-term follow-up of these plots could help to collect an enough large dataset to study the effects of breeders’ practices and the ageing process of grasslands.
