Ergothérapie et trouble « DYS », Un accompagnement global au service de l'estime de soi

Abstract : Background: When taking care of children suffering from learning disorders, Occupational Therapists (O.T) are often requested to accompany them on academic skills. However, these children frequently suffer from a very low self-esteem, due to the many situations of failure their experience in all the spheres of their daily lives. The aim of this research was to explore how the O.T. can influence their self-esteem by acting on the occupational participation. Method: The qualitative method was the most appropriate one. A questionnaire was built, based on 3 theoretical matrices and composed of 6 open-ended questions. 3 occupational therapists working in a S.E.S.S.A.D (specialized home education and healthcare service) or in a private practice were interviewed. Results: The 3 O.T said that they were only requested for academic skills. They did not systematically assess the participation in leisure, but they recognized the interest of this practice. 2 out of the 3 O.T were aware of their impact on the self-esteem competences, and they insisted on the fact that this was done through a global vision of the child. Conclusion: Occupational therapists influence the self-esteem of children with learning disabilities by allowing them to reduce situations of failure at school or in their daily life, or during leisure time. However, there are many obstacles to their exploration of the extracurricular activities. One of them can be the parents, persons whose point of view was not included in this research. Always with the idea of improving occupational therapy care, this may be the subject of a future study.
