Prévalence du surpoids et de l’obésité lors du recours à l’interruption volontaire de grossesse. Étude épidémiologique prospective au CHU de Bordeaux sur une cohorte de 308 patientes

Abstract : Introduction: the issue associated with contraception could lead to increased unintended pregnancy risk for overweight or obese patients. Thus, this could lead to an increased risk of induced abortion. The aim objective was to establish whether the prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher when induced abortion occurs, compared to the general population. Materials and methods: we conducted a prospective epidemiological study at the Bordeaux University Hospital from May 18, 2018 until October 30, 2018. Eligible patients were the patients hospitalized for drug-induced abortion or surgical abortion and then, selected between 18 to 45-year-old. We compared the prevalence of overweight and obesity in our cohort with women of an identical age with those three French epidemiological studies done in the general population: ObEpi 2012, ESTEBAN 2014-2016 and results of the cohort CONSTANCES (Matta et al. 2016). Results: among the 346 eligible patients, 308 patients were included in this study. Prevalence of overweight was 18.5% (n=57) and prevalence of obesity was 7.1% (n=22). Those results were not higher than in any of the three mentioned studies above. They were significantly lower in patients aged 18 to 39 in our cohort compared to the ESTEBAN study (respectively 18.6% and 7.1% versus 20.5% and 11.3%, p = 0.036). Conclusion: overweight or obese patients were not overrepresented in the abortion based on the prevalence studies of overweight and obesity into the general population.
