Obstacles to the gynaecological follow-up of migrant women: qualitative study led in the Grenoble area

Abstract : Introduction: A lot of migrant women live in Grenoble district and are taken in charge by general practitioners. They represent a vulnerable population whose gynaecological health is more fragile than in a more general population. The purpose of this survey is to understand why the gynaecological follow up of these women is so restricted. Method: This survey was achieved by two investigators, leading to semi directed interviews of 9 migrant women living in Grenoble district. Results: A few of the interviewed persons had a gynaecological follow up. It reveals two kinds of restrictions : those linked to health in general (including access to health care) and those linked specifically to gynaecological field. These migrant women shared their difficulties to understand medical and gynaecological subjects as well as their medical follow up leading to an orientation proposed by the health professionals. They preferred achieving psychogical welfare and a good daily life rather than dealing with their health. A good relationship with their general practioner as well as the help from other social protagonists were positive factors for their medical follow up. Conclusion: Through this survey many restrictions have been revealed. The priority for these migrant women is to reduce their precariousness as well as to be helped along with the access to health care in order to achieve a certain self sufficiency to their gynaecological follow up.
