Abstract : Context: general medical interns communication training is put at the heart of the discussion. Moving in that direction, different training courses are being set up in Universities, and among them, motivational interviewing. In Caen, a motivational interviewing teacher is an internship master too who trains them in this communication technique. Object: evaluate the effect of motivational interviewing training on communication skills of trained people and the contributions of motivational interviewing training about medical practice. Method: qualitative study by semi-structured interviews conducted with seven trained-people in motivational interviewing, during their level 1 practitioner internship in general medicine. Results: trained people told of having an open-mind on communication with this formation, improved communication skills, including increased listening skills and a better overall approach to patients. This useful technique in practice requires continuous training. Learning other communication techniques would equally be advised to answer the different situations faced by the general practitioner. Student awareness of communication and especially motivational interviewing was necessary in their cursus. Although the modalities have yet to be defined, frequent and repeated practice over time in order to integrate the basics of this technique is necessary. Conclusion: the study shows that motivational interview training had raised awareness and improved communication skills for trained people with a better overall approach to patients. The next step would be to set up communication training more comprehensive for all students.
