État des lieux des connaissances et pratiques du sevrage ambulatoire d'alcool : enquête auprès de médecins généralistes installés en Basse-Normandie

Abstract : Context: France reports stable consumption of alcohol for the past few years. Nevertheless, it represents a major public health issue. Medical recommendations, for example those published by the SFA (Société Française d’Addictologie) in 2014, are evolving and the general practitioner is still in the center of the care pathway. The goal of this study is to evaluate the practices and knowledge of general practitioners of Basse-Normandie, concerning outpatient alcohol withdrawal management in order to help them improve it. Method: we conducted an observational, descriptive and quantitative study using an anonymous survey with close-ended questions. It was sent to general practitioners involved in university teaching. Results: young doctors and those who know about the early identification and brief intervention seem to have a better theoretical background (15.6%, p=0.019). 66.7% of the practitioners prescribe benzodiazepine, mostly Oxazepam (48.7%) for 8 to 14 days. Only 2.5% of them prescribe the complete treatment recommended for alcohol withdrawal. Discussion: working environment of the general practitioner isn’t the easiest place to apply the medical recommendations, but a lot of encouraging changes are made concerning primary prevention and medical formation.
