Étude de la part perçue d’effet placebo par les patients de médecine générale vis-à-vis d’un antalgique : le paracétamol

Abstract : INTRODUCTION: The patient's expectation for a given treatment is a major factor in the efficacy of the treatment and is one of the main factors influencing the placebo effect. In a context where paracetamol is the most prescribed treatment in France and as some studies raise questions about the intrinsic efficacy of this molecule as analgesic, it seemed relevant to try to measure the perceived share of placebo effect by patients and identify its determinants. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative and multicentric study to evaluate the perceived share of placebo effect by patients with Paracetamol through a self-evaluation survey distributed in three Ile de France based medical practices. RESULTS: The study involved 372 patients. The share of efficacy awarded by patients to the placebo effect is estimated to average 30%. It is statistically higher in men population than in women and this proportion decreased for elderly patients. It is also related to the positive perception that patients have of the placebo effect and the acceptability of a prescription of a placebo by their reffering physician. CONCLUSION: Knowing and taking into account the perceived share of placebo effect by patients would optimize and potentiate the effectiveness of the treatment and thus constitute a cheap and powerful therapeutic resource that has to be adapted to each patient and each situation.
