Évaluation des pratiques professionnelles sur le dépistage du cannabis par les sages-femmes durant la grossesse

Abstract : Objectives: Cannabis is the most commonly used banned substance in France and in most developed countries. Its effects during pregnancy have been studied and distinguished from the effects of tobacco. In this study, we wanted to identify what the barriers and motivators are for screening for cannabis use by midwives during pregnancy ? Methods: It was a multi-center quantitative study based on a five-part questionnaire for midwives working in level II and III maternity, who had already done prenatal clinics. Results and conclusion: We observed that the majority of midwives indicated that they systematically asked about cannabis use. In addition, among the main motivators for cannabis screening were risks to the fetus and tobacco use by one or both parents. Limited time during clinics, as well as a lack of knowledge about the outcomes of cannabis and a lack of information on care and the available resources were identified as important obstacles to this screening. The screening for cannabis use seems to be done. However, this is a declarative study therefore there is a bias. It would be interesting to compare the answers obtained with the information found in the medical files. There seems to be a need to improve the initial and in-service training of midwives on addictive behaviours as well as to improve communication within healthcare facilities, for example via the development of treatment protocols.
