Le recours au guérisseur et au rebouteux au Pays basque : enquête sur les déterminants de ce recours auprès des consultants de guérisseurs et rebouteux du Pays basque

Abstract : Introduction: the recourse to the healer is a phenomenon that has lasted for centuries. Always relevant today, it fits perfectly in the wave of complementary and alternative medicine and concerns a large part of our patients. As physicians, we know little about this empirical medicine whose use is sometimes considered taboo. What leads our patients to the healer and especially what they find there escapes us. We wanted to better understand the determinants leading to the use of the healer and the bonesetter, and thus better understand the universe of our patients, in order to better take care of them. Methods: we carried out a qualitative study by free interviews with consultants of healers and bonesetters of the Basque Country, after recruitment by sampling "snowball". Results: 20 consultants of healers and bonesetters were interviewed, they were also patients of general medicine. Recourse to the healer is a journey whose starting point is in the majority of cases a lack of solution of conventional medicine to a given problem. Word of mouth plays a vital role in the recourse to the healer. In some cases it is the doctor who advises this recourse. The healer is a popular, simple and benevolent person who inspires trust and confidence. Thus, the patient-healer relationship is often similar to "psychotherapy of a different kind". Moreover, the investment of the patient's body is major during the care session, all making holistic care. The practice of the healer by the use of the symbol and especially the symbolism of transference and the magical thought, is part of a different rationality. The use of these other rationalities is sometimes necessary in the care of the patient and his illness. Conclusion: the recourse to the healer can be integrated into the path of the patient in his search for health. Conventional medicine must be aware of this timeless and universal phenomenon and understand its determinants. The general practitioner, coordinator of the patient's care path must accompany him in the best way in this recourse, thus protecting him from the risk of abuse.
