Etude 5P-PILOTE : faisabilité d’une évaluation d’ateliers de prévention « Atout Âge » à La Réunion

Abstract : Background : The frailty phenotype (Fried et al., 2001) is a predictive and reversible factor of disability. Faced with the increase in the proportion of elderly people in the Reunion population, the Economic Interest Grouping « Vieillissement Actif » developed with the help of the research team 5P a multimodal prevention interventions, named « Atout Âge » targeting the improvement of mobility for retired people. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of a large-scale study measuring the impact of workshops on quality of life and senior mobility using the innovative measurement tool “SmartCheck”. Methods: This was a faisability study ussing the 5P-PILOTE data, a monocentrict, comparative longitudinal study, performed in the university hospital center sud Réunion. Ninety-six patients, ≥ 55 years old, were recruited from 04/09/2017 to 29/01/2019. A visit was made before and after 3 months of weekly one-hour adapted mobility workshops « Atout Âge ». The visits included a standardized geriatric assessment, the SF 36 quality of life questionnaire, an assessment of frailty according to Fried et al., as well as innovative measures of static balance and mobility performed help of the “SmartCheck®” tool. Feasibility was evaluated on the recruitment capacity of the number of subjects needed, on the technical feasibility and acceptability of the innovative measures. Results: The mean age of the population was 68 ± 8 years. The vast majority of subjects were women (n = 83,91.2%). According to the criteria of Fried et al., 52 (58.4%) were robust, 34 (38.2%) pre-frail and 3 (3.4%) frail. The number of subjects needed for the large-scale study was estimated at 1000 patients. The recruitment rate of 5.6 patients per month per investigator as measured by the pilot study achieves this goal in one year. The technical feasibility and acceptability of the innovative measures were validated during this pilot phase. Discussion : The 5P-PILOTE study successfully tested the feasibility for the implementation of a large-scale study aimed at evaluating the impact of the «Atout Âge » workshops and the detection early fragility using innovative measurement tools of mobility.
