État des connaissances sur le syndrome d’apnées hypopnées obstructives du sommeil par la population des Landes consultant en cabinet de médecine générale

Abstract : Introduction: obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a disease which can cause serious complications on patient health, and seems to be unknown by patients, even if protective actions have been employed in the past years. The aim of this study is to assess general knowledge about obstructive sleep apnea syndrome among patients who consult a general practitioner in Landes. Methods: this descriptive multicentric epidemiologic study took place from July to August 2018 in four general practices cabinets in Landes, France. The study was based on anonymous questionnaire about symptoms and complication relative to OSAHS. All patients over 18 years old who consulted in general practice were invited to answer the questionnaire. Results: a total of 880 questionnaires were analyzed. In the sample, 96% of patients had already heard of OSAHS; more than 75% of patients recognized severe snoring and daytime sleepiness as symptoms but the awareness of the others symptoms and complications showed gaps in the population. Factors linked to a better knowledge about OSAHS were being under 40 years old, female sex, having had higher education and suffering from OSAHS. Conclusion: OSAHS is a pathology that is still poorly kown by patients although many of them have already heard of it. More targeted information campaigns could improve this level of knowledge about this pathology.
