Évaluation des connaissances des parents d’enfants nés à partir du 1er janvier 2018, vivant en Gironde, sur la nouvelle obligation vaccinale

Abstract : Background and purpose : Since few years, vaccination sparks rise of mistrust which is responsible for a drop in immunization coverage and an upsurge of certain diseases. France decided to expand the immunization obligation from 3 to 11 vaccinations for children under 2 years of age born on or after the 1st of January 2018. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of the parents of these children regarding these recent changes. Method : We conducted an observational, cross-sectional and multicenter quantitative study based on a questionnaire given to the parents concerned in 10 pharmacies in Gironde between January 8th and April 30th, 2019. Results : We collected 223 usable questionnaires. The results showed a “good knowledge” rate of 22% among parents of children born on or after January 1st 2018. Our population was mostly represented by women (88,3%), by parents belonging to the age group 31-35 years old (42,6%) and to the socio-professional category of employees (47,5%). 86,1% of participants had heard about the new law on mandatory immunization, among them, 78,1% through the media and 51% by the general practitioner and/or the pediatrician. The diseases concerned about mandatory immunization the most often mentioned were measles (90,0%), tetanus (88,6%), rubella (87,7%) and pertussis (87,3%) while the least known were haemophilus influenzae b (28,2%), meningococcal C (43,6%) and pneumococcal (52,7%). The only significant criterion for the “good knowledge” was the parental age with 51,0% of parents who were between 31 and 35 years old. Conclusion : Parental knowledge concerning the extension of the mandatory immunization from January 1st 2018 are limited, particularly for the diseases concerned. Nevertheless, parents of young children are mostly supportive for these changes and it is important to bring information which is necessary to understand the importance of immunization for young children, thus strengthening their adhesion and the vaccination coverage.
