Comparaison entre le suivi par SMS et par appel téléphonique des patients pris en charge par le Centre anti-poison de Bordeaux

Abstract : Introduction: patients who have called a poison control centre (PCC) are contacted again when follow-up is considered appropriate. This activity represents a significant and growing workload over the years. The benefit of using SMS has been demonstrated in many health fields. However, its effectiveness has never been evaluated at the CPP of Bordeaux. The objective of this study was to compare the use of SMS with telephone calls in the follow-up of toxicovigilance of patients managed by the CPP of Bordeaux. Methods This is a prospective, monocentric and interventional study conducted at the CPP in Bordeaux between February and March 2019. The patients included were divided into SMS or telephone groups (TEL group) according to their follow-up mode. We chose to study the overall response rate in the different groups as the main outcome. Secondary judgment criteria were the characteristics of the intoxication, the patient and reminders about the response of the person contacted. Results: of the 1180 calls handled by the CPP of Bordeaux during the study period, 835 patients were included (441 in the SMS group and 394 in the TEL group). There was no significant difference in the response rate between the two groups (93.9% in the SMS group and 92.9% in the TEL group), nor in the number of reminders. A multivariate study showed that gender, age and type of follow-up do not influence response rate. Conclusion: the use of SMS did not influence the response rate in the follow-up of patients treated by the CPP of Bordeaux compared to the telephone. However, its ease of use and the prospects for optimizing this tool are promising ways to improve its performance.
