Évaluation systématique de l’impact de la consommation d’alcool dans l’apparition de symptômes équivalents à ceux du syndrome post-commotionnel chez les patients de 18-35 ans consultant aux urgences du CHU de Bordeaux

Abstract : Introduction: post-concussion like symptoms (headaches, asthenia, sleep disorders...) are as different as subjective, but show the health status perceived by the patients. Studies have revealed that from 10 to 20 % of patients who have been victims of traumatisms will show these PCLS that might last for months. France being one of the countries where alcohol consumption is the highest, especially among young people, it was interesting to bring these two health public issues together. Material and method: the main aim was to assess if people who drink alcohol have more or less PCLS. Throughout an observational, transverse, prospective as well as multicenter study, conducted from the 24th of September to the 7th of October 2018 in the emergency departments of Pellegrin and Saint-André, Bordeaux’ university hospitals, a survey was proposed to all people between 18 and 35 years old. The main criteria was the rate of patients in the target population who had drunk alcohol in the last 24 hours before their arrival to the emergencies, according to the presentation, or no presentation, of one or more PCLS when they arrived. Results: among the 516 patients included in the study, 11% have been to the hospital for a reason linked to alcohol. There was no significant difference in the presentation of PCLS among the patients who had drunk alcohol and those who had not. Discussion: the disabling nature of PCLS, damages issued from chronic drinking, the early questionnaire in comparison to the appearance of symptoms are as many arguments explaining this unexpected result. Following these same patients in the next months or studying this very same activity in the framework of a general practice, are interesting perspectives for the future.
