Perception de la campagne de prévention en santé environnementale à la maternité du CHU de Bordeaux, une étude qualitative auprès de 13 mamans

Abstract : Background: from conception to the age of two, a window of opportunity stands during which the environment can change the expression of the genome and increase the future risk of disease. The Regional Environmental Health Plan 2017-2021 aims to improve knowledge about organic pollutants (including endocrine disruptors (EDs) and carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic substances (CMRs)) and raise awareness of the potential risk they represent. Pregnancy is an opportune time to change lifestyles and women spontaneously adopt behaviors that reduce risks to their health. How was a prevention campaign on environmental health at the University Hospital Center Pellegrin maternity ward in Bordeaux perceived and understood by mothers ? Methods: we conducted a qualitative survey of women who gave birth at the of Pellegrin maternity ward between july and december 2018, using semi-structured interviews conducted in patients' homes, 3 to 8 months after childbirth. Results: thirteen mothers were interviewed, but few of them were able to identify sources of CMR in their home environment. The postpartum period was not the right time to spread prevention messages, and mothers were concerned about environmental health issues but were passive in researching information. They lacked confidence in organic labels, used smartphone apps to choose their cosmetics and household products. They would have also liked a united front from the health professionals and public authorities on environmental risks. Discussion: we should inform parents earlier in the pregnancy. We need to focus on the training of caregivers and consider a public information campaign to provide prevention messages about environmental health risks for future generations of parents.
