Les blessures liées à la pratique du breakdance : étude épidémiologique transversale descriptive chez les danseurs amateurs et professionnels de plus de dix-huit ans

Abstract : Objective: The primary aim of this study was to determine the incidence and anatomical location of injuries to amateur and professional breakers in France. The secondary aims were to research the risk factor of such injuries and describe particularly the mechanisms of injuries to the wrist. Method: 94 dancers were interviewed either during competitions or via the internet by means of a two-part questionnaire. The first part was a self-administered questionnaire, the second part was a structured interview. Results: There was an incidence of 2,25 injuries per 1000 hours of exposure. The main anatomical locations were the wrist (20.31%), the ankle (15.63%), the knee (12.50%), the shoulder (10.94%), and the cervical spine (10.16%). The most traumatic moves were ‘the flare’ (wrist) and ‘the halo’ (cervical spine). The main mechanisms of injuries to the wrist were overuse (80%) and landing (20%). Dancers who had done some muscular reinforcement with a coach had less injuries (p=0,032). Conclusion: Breakers' injuries are common and particularly affect the wrist. The most traumatic moves are those that require technical skills, repetition of impact, and non-physiological positions. ‘The flare’ generates injuries via repeated axial compression of the wrist, with a dorsal flexion and ulnar tilt. Muscular reinforcement with a coach could be a protective factor.
