Pratique de la diversification alimentaire chez le nourrisson : étude transversale descriptive auprès de parents d’enfants de 4 à 24 mois

Abstract : Due to the current medical demographics of pediatricians, general practitioners will have to play a vital role in the follow-up of children. The recommendations concerning dietary diversification have continued to evolve in recent years. With the growing sources of non-medical information, doctors need to provide parents with clear and tailored responses to guide them step-by-step through diversification. Through this study, we wanted to study current practices of parents regarding dietary diversification and infant feeding in light of current recommendations. This was a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from May 1 to June 30, 2019 among pediatricians and general practitioners in Alencon. The questionnaires were left in self-service in the waiting room. Our study allows us to realize that the recommendations are partially applied by the parents on the city of Alencon. Regarding the age of the beginning of the diversification, almost 2/3 of the parents were in agreement with the recommendations of 4 to 6 months. The same proportion can be found for the age of introduction of fruits and vegetables. The differences with respect to recommendations appear, however, with proteins, fats, allergenic foods or gluten. Breastfeeding recommendations are still moderately followed despite the gradual increase from year to year. The choice of artificial milk recommended by age is in agreement with the recommendations by a small majority until the age of 1 year. After cow's milk begins to take a prominent place while learned societies advise growth milk up to 3 years. The most used source of information should be the practitioner using the health log. GPs and pediatricians have a key role in providing information on dietary diversification, but there is also a need for appropriate supports available to parents to help them achieve this step. Updating the health book and guides distributed by general practitioners or pediatricians would be a very good proposal.
