Étude transfrontalière des connaissances, attitudes et pratiques vis-à-vis du VIH et de la contraception dans la population adulte de la région entre Oiapoque et Saint-Georges, 2017-2018

Abstract : BACKGROUND: HIV prevalence in French Guiana is above 1%. And More than 860,000 people live with HIV in Brazil. French-Brazilian border is an area where exchanges et mobility make the population been called vulnerable. OCS, Cross-Border Sexual and Reproductive Health Prevention project should enable the assessment of knowledge, attitudes and practices in the region on HIV and contraception. METHODS: Our monocentric cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the border between Saint-Georges and Oiapoque in adult population using a questionnaire in French or Portuguese between October 2017 and February 2018. RESULTS: 630 surveys were realized, 258 in Saint-Georges and 372 in Oiapoque. We observed that 42.6% of people thought mosquito bites could transmit HIV. People who had commercial sex were 22.2% did not use condoms in the last sexual intercourse. In the sample 87.5% of women had already had pregnancy, 41.5% did not use contraception. CONCLUSION: Often forgotten by strategies for sexual and reproductive health, border territories are a key issue in the fight against HIV and unwanted pregnancies. The management of their vulnerable populations cannot be done without adapting to the peculiarities of these regions. Brazil and France have no choice but to lead joint actions such as the OCS project.
