État des lieux des défibrillateurs automatisés externes dans la ville de Bordeaux

Abstract : Background: 46 000 french people die each year of cardiac arrest and early defibrillation is a key way to increase their survival rate. Since 2007 the use of AEDs by the public is possible. The objective of this study is to establish the current situation of AEDs deployment in Bordeaux and to specify the scope of their actual location and use. Method: this descriptive study took place from January 11, 2018 to January 31, 2019. First, we studied a precise cartography of the territory. Then, we checked and compiled the data of the ARLoD and Staying Alive databases. Finally, all sites likely to possess AEDs have been listed and contacted and we sent email questionnaires to all equiped sites. We studied the ReAC registry during the same period. Results: thanks to the compilation of all these data, it became possible to establish a map of AEDs on Bordeaux. Of the 406 selected sites, 371 were contacted, 323 AEDs were identified on 253 sites. That is 6.59 / Km2 and 1.29 / 1000 Hab. The ARLoD database only found 25% of them. The questionnaire had 70.5% of responses, that is 233 DAE on 176 sites. The park is composed of 62% fully automatic defibrillators. 96% of the AEDs are located indoors. 71% of outdoor AEDs were stolen at least once. There were 19 uses between 2009 and 2019. Conclusion: AEDs remain underused. The current mapping is unsatisfactory and the legislative evolution of December 2018 providing for the creation of a census file is very important. Moreover there are many psychological barriers to the use of AEDs. To train and inform on basic life support is fundamental. Nevertheless, the operation and the good keeping of the ReAC register makes it possible to define the places where AEDs might prove to be useful, in addition to the establishments which are subject to obligation since the end of 2018.
