Pratiques rapportées et représentations des patients concernant l’utilisation de médicaments périmés

Abstract : Introduction: after consulting studies ran by the scientific community about expired medication and their efficiency, we became interested about the behavior of the French population towards expired medicine and its potential use. Method: twenty six semi-structured interviews form the base of our qualitative study. These interviews were conducted between January and December of 2018 in southwest France, throughout the regions of Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne. The analysis of this data was collected using the NVivo 12 ® software. Results: in general, most of the participants in the study returned their expired medication to the local pharmacy. The majority of participants said they did not feel comfortable consuming medication after the expiration date, and would only keep them for up to a month afterwards, voicing concern about the lack of efficiency and its potential toxicity. Furthermore, throughout the course of our interviews, many participants exhibited a lack of knowledge on the topic of their expired medications, and expressed a genuine interest for more information. While some individuals acknowledged the disposal of medication into the garbage was a mistake, the outcome of expired medicine remained unclear to most of them. Conclusion: this study concludes that the subject of expired medication is unknown to the vast majority of the public. As medical professionals, the encouragement of the use of expired medicine is not recommended; however, important information on the subject should be given to patients in case of ingestion. Measures can be taken to reduce the quantity of leftover medication such as the consideration of extending the shelf-life of certain drugs after the marketing authorization, as well as selling the medication per unit. Beyond the obvious economic and ecological waste, when kept at home these medications represent a significant health hazard for all individuals in the home.
