Femmes médecins généralistes et relation médecin-patient : étude qualitative auprès de patients ayant déclaré une femme médecin traitant en Gironde

Abstract : Introduction: medical feminization is a growing phenomenon, and parity should be reached in France in 2020. The practice of women differs from that of men in their organization, but also in the relational domain. Knowing that a quality doctor-patient relationship improves the quality of care, we interviewed patients who had chosen a female GP to gather their feelings about their relationship with their doctor and to study the quality of their care. Method: a qualitative study of 11 semi-structured telephone interviews with patients with various profiles was conducted. The analysis of the data was carried out according to the method of grounded theory, with the help of the software N Vivo. Results: the patients interviewed are satisfied with their relationship with their doctors, based on trust. They appreciate the softness, sensitivity and maternal aspect of their doctors. Greater listening, a more empathetic attitude, and more patient-centered care are the observed benefits, while reduced working time is the main disadvantage. The woman-woman relationship is facilitated, while patients are not bothered by sex difference, there is no taboo, thanks to a quality relationship. The quality of the relationship is based on a good understanding, a human relationship, competence and availability. Conclusion: feminine quality improve the relationship and the quality of care, even if the personality of the doctor takes precedence over his sex.
