Étude des facteurs prédictifs de l'allaitement maternel selon la théorie du comportement planifié

Abstract : Backgroung: according to WHO recommendations, exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is the optimal way to nourish newborns. Its benefits are widely approved, and yet France remains one of the developed countries with the lowest breastfeeding rate. We chose a psycho-behavioral approach with the use of planned behavior theory. Objective: identify the strength of each construct of the theory to predict the intention and initiation of breastfeeding. Methods: longitudinal, quantitative study with collection from december 2017 to march 2018 using a Likert scale written questionnaire and then collection by telephone postpartum. Our sample consisted of pregnant women in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy from the Saint-Palais general hospital and a midwifery clinic in Pau. Our statistical analyses consisted of simple and multiple linear regressions. Results: 60 questionnaires were complete and included in our sample. Attitude scores, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control are significantly related to the intent-to-breastfeed score. The attitude and perceived behavioral control scores obtained a higher score variance than the subjective norms. In addition, 75% of the behavior variance is explained by the intention score and the perceived behavioral control accounts for 44.7% of the behavior scores. Conclusion: in our sample, the constructs of the theory of planned behavior are significantly correlated with breastfeeding intentions, just as intention scores are significant predictors of breastfeeding behavior. Further research would be interesting in order to increase the credibility of our study and to widen the fields of action to promote breastfeeding.
