Effet de l'EMDR sur les aspects émotionnels, cognitifs et corporels du TSPT

Abstract : Objectives: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most researched form of psychotherapy and is very used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). EMDR targets emotions, thoughts and body feelings of the traumatic memory. The aim of this exploratory study is to prove that EMDR therapy acts on cognitive, affective and physiological aspects beyond PTSD symptoms. Methods: our study assesses these different aspects before and after EMDR therapy with 12 questionnaires filled by 29 French military and civilian patients affected with PTSD. Results: Our findings show a significant evolution of 11 of these questionnaires. Clinical symptoms have decreased significantly, cognitive schemas have evolved and attachment styles have become more secure. Sleep quality and hardiness have improved, negative feeling and dissociative experiences have decreased. We found a strong correlation between clinical scores, but others (like the Young Schema Questionnaire, the Dispositional Resilience Scale and the Relationship Scale Questionnaire) seem to be more independent. Conclusion: in our study, EMDR therapy has a specific impact on emotion, cognition and physiological response of the traumatic memory. Our findings indicate that EMDR may target cognitive schemas, adult attachment styles and hardiness independently.
