Master Thesis

Les traducteurs de polonais et leur rôle de passeur

Abstract : This thesis focuses on translators’ role as cultural transmitters by studying translators of Polish language into French language. Indeed, often, translators do not only translate, but also have several powers to strengthen their position as a cultural transmitter: being proactive by suggesting original manuscripts and convincing a publisher, collaborating with the publisher to present to the public the best translation, producing a speech through the writing of a preface to support the translation and acting as a mediator to promote the translation once published. Nevertheless, translators do not take on in the same way this function of transmitter: they are not working in the same spaces and do not transmit the same content. Therefore, all translators are not equally transmitters. The meeting of three criteria (the professionalization, the production’s legitimacy and the translator’s recognition) highlighted different ideal types of translators of Polish language and thus the types of powers corresponding to them. Translators do not have the same resources and do not have the same powers. Resources can also function as conditions of possibility allowing translators to influence the construction of visibility of a work and to be convinced of their own role as transmitters, hence allowing them to dedicate themselves voluntarily to an uncertain and often poorly recognized activity.
