Le rôle des femmes des imperatores et des triumvirs dans les guerres civiles de la fin de la République romaine

Abstract : "Let them simply govern, [...] as mothers, their first concern will be to save our soldiers". These words of Aristophanes are far from a Greco-Roman social reality where women had no political rights. However, recent studies, following on from the «women's studies» born in the 1970s, tend to show that there was a form of women’s emancipation in ancient Roman society. By setting time limits at 112 BC and 9 AD and choosing the legitimate wives of the protagonists in the civil wars, this paper aims to prove that these wives, perceived in different ways in the sources, had a role in the political events of their time. Somewives are completely hidden from the sources and appear only once or twice, while others embodied a republican women’s ideal. Finally, others, for the purposes of Augustan propaganda, went beyond their role as wives. This work is therefore an opportunity to demonstrate that, although they did not gain any political rights during the period, the matron of the end of the Roman Republic was no longer the austere matron of the Republic's beginnings. We can even see that some of them interfere in public life alongside their husbands, to the great displeasure of Greek-Latin authors. They are thus the expression of a "women’scitizenship", taking part in civil wars. It can therefore be deduced that the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Principality are experiencing a short period of time that could be described, anachronistically, as "women’s emancipation" that arises in a context of crisis.
