Attentes et intentions des patients suivis pour une maladie chronique devant la prescription d’activité physique par un médecin généraliste : étude qualitative auprès de patients en Ille-et-Vilaine, et Morbihan

Abstract : Background: Physical activity on prescription by general practitioners has proven its benefits in term of quality of life, morbidity-mortality and cost-effectiveness. This work explores the expectations and point of view from patients attending chronic disease about the prescription of physical activity, and their general practitioner’s role. Method: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-directed individual interviews. The inclusion criteria were the age from 18 to 64 years old, and the presence of a long affection. Results: Fourteen patients participated between May and November 2018. This study showed that they were quite responsive to a prescription of physical activity provided they see a concrete benefit on their pathology, their treatment or their general health. This intervention should be part of the general practitioner’s role, even if other prescribers were suggested. Oral counselling and discussion were preferred to a written prescription of physical activity. Coaching was expected from other competent professionals recommended by the prescriber. Conclusions: Promoting physical activity should not be reduced to medical prescription. If this prescription is efficient and seems to be well accepted, it would not represent the patients attending chronic disease’s main expectation. Motivational interviewing specific to adapted physical activity could be developed to carry behaviour changing. It could be associated to a Therapeutic Patient Education’s structured program.
