Pratique du sommeil partagé en cas d'allaitement maternel : une étude qualitative sur les représentations et attentes des parents quant aux conseils délivrés par les soignants en Ille-et-Vilaine. Partie 2, relations aux soignants

Abstract : Co-sleeping is a true present-day social issue. New parents are interested in but also question co-sleeping, as do health professionals. However, there are very few studies and recommendations on this topic. The purpose of this study is to characterize how young parents understand co-sleeping and what their expectations are towards co-sleeping in the context of breastfeeding their newborn, from birth to 6 months old. Method: Qualitative study, including analysis of 24 semi-conducted interviews of women breastfeeding their baby of less than 6 months old, with a checkup from a general practitioner, pediatrician, midwife or maternal and child protection. Verbatim transcript of the interviews. Analysis according to the model of rooted theorizing and to data triangularization / modèle de la théorisation ancrée puis triangularisation des données. Results : Among all the women interviewed, it is a frequent occurrence that baby shares the parental bed, at least part of the night. The mothers share their positive feedback such as strong bonds with baby, a breastfeeding easier to set up and pursue, and also a way to fight a significant tiredness. For some of the women interviewed, it is also a way to fight sudden infant death, being able to survey baby from up close. Other women state it can be a risk of suffocation, crushing, even more so when bedsharing implies bedroom-sharing as well. Co-sleeping is not always well lived. Life as a couple can be put on hold due to the lack of sleep, the lack of intimacy, disagreements sometimes about the place of sleep of the baby. Interviews also show a fear of bringing up a whimsical, unmanageable child due to immediate response to baby’s needs. According to the women interviewed, health care professionals convey a negative perspective on co-sleeping, with many taboos and moralizing speeches. Women wish health professionals would take time to discuss this topic with them and try to understand their point of view. Conclusion: Co-sleeping is a reality, whatever risks such as suffocating or sudden death there may be. However, by fear of judgement, lack of open discussion on the subject, and lack of understanding of some of the health professionals, this topic is still taboo.
